German heavy tanks. Tiger Tanks in military art prints showing the Tiger tank on the Russian Front, Normandy and tank aces Albert Kerscher and Michael Wittman.

Wittmann at Villers Bocage, Normandy, 0900 hrs June 13th 1944 by David Pentland  While other Tigers of his command struck northwest and decimated the tanks and half tracks of "the Sharpshooters" and Rifle Brigade parked along the road towards point 213 and Caen, Haupsturmfuhrer Michel Wittmann attacked on his own to the south east.  Driving his panzer into the village of Villers Bocage. he proceeded to destroy the Stuart and Cromwell tanks of Viscount Arthur Cranley's 4th County of London Yeomanry (the Sharpshooters) RHQ.  Although subsequently immobilized in the village center, the battle between the British 7th Armoured Division "Desert Rats" and Wittmann's 101st Heavy Tank Battalion continued for a full day, and blunted the British threat to the German line.

Kerscher's Defence of Neuhauser Forest by David Pentland Albert Kerscher's (511 Heavy Tank Battalion) scored his 100th kill holding off the Russian Army during the German evacuation of wounded from the Baltic Ports. 15th April 1945. (Tiger I and Panzer IV shown)

Tiger at the Gate, Berlin 30th April 1945 by David Pentland  A Tiger I and PAK 40 anti tank gun of the "Müncheberg" Division, field a final defence of the capital in front of the Brandenburg Gate under the shattered remains of the famous Linden trees. The under-strength division had just been formed the previous month from a mixture of ad hoc units and various marks of tank. Despite this it put up a spirited fight until its final destruction in early May.

Counter Attack at Villers Bocage by David Pentland.

Counter Attack at Villers Bocage by David Pentland.

A handful of Tigers from 2nd Kompanie SS Schwere Panzer Abteilung 101 halted the advance of the British 7th Armoured Division, The Desert Rats, outside the little Norman village of Villers Bocage. Prowling through the streets of the village, the solitary tank of Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Wittmann knocked out most of the 4th County of London Yeomanrys regimental HQ Stuart and Cromwell tanks, before falling victim to a 6pdr anti-tank gun. Wittmann survived the battle but was killed a month later on August 8th 1944.

Strike For Gela, Sicily, 11th June 1943 by David Pentland.

Tiger I tanks of 2 Kompanie/ Schwere Panzer Abteilung 504, attached to Panzer Division Herman Goring, launch their attack on the main US 7th Army landing beach at Gela, on the first day of Operation Husky. Despite the fact that the Herman Goring troops were untried in battle it was only the devastating effect of allied naval gunfire that stopped them reaching and probably destroying the beach head.

Clash of Steel, Prokhorovka, Kursk, 12th July 1943 by David Pentland.

Clash of Steel, Prokhorovka, Kursk, 12th July 1943 by David Pentland.

The battle for Prokhorovka marked the high water mark of the German southern drive for Kursk. At the apex of the thrust were the 14 tiger tanks of the 13 Heavy Tank Company, 1st SS Panzer Division Liebstandarte, led by Michael Wittman. Their advance was eventually thwarted, however, by the epic charge of the Soviet 29th Guards Tank Corps, as part of 5th Guards Tank Armys furious counter attack against the SS Tank Corps.

Taming the Tiger by Geoff Lea.

Taming the Tiger by Geoff Lea.

It is August 1944, barely two months since the Allies landed their first troops on the beaches of Normandy. After the failed Operation Lüttich (codename given to a German counterattack during the Battle of Normandy, which took place around the American positions near Mortain from 7 August to 13 August, 1944 ) The German Panzer Divisions were in full retreat, The British and American Generals believed it to be critical to halt them before they cauld regroup. Caught in the Gap at Falaise, the battle was to be decisive. Flying throughout a continuous onslaught, rocket-firing Typhoons kept up their attacks on the trapped armoured divisions from dawn to dusk. The effect was devastating: at the end of the ten day battle the 100,000 strong German force was decimated. The battle of the Falaise Pocket marked the closing phase of the Battle of Normandy with a decisive German defeat. It is believed that between 80,000 to 100,000 German troops were caught in the encirclement of which 10,000 t.........

Tigers in Normandy by Nicolas Trudgian.

Tigers in Normandy by Nicolas Trudgian.

The Battle for Point 112, a strategically positioned hill just a few miles south-west of Caen, was the scene of the most violent fighting between German and British armor, artillery and ground troops during the weeks immediately following the D-Day invasion, in June 1944. Desperate to regain Hill 112, on July 9th, the Tiger tanks of SS Panzer Battalion 102 were ordered to advance. 2 Kompanies Tigers managed to occupy the eastern slopes of the hill, while 1 Kompanie came under fire as they rached the first houses in the small village of Maltot. At this point they came head on to British Sherman tanks. Entering the village firing his 88, Unterscharfuhrer Fey in tank 138 quickly knocked out three Shermans at 200 yards range, and by the evening of July 10th the Panzers had re-taken Maltot. But Allied artillery had driven the Germans off Hill 112. The battle raged on for another three weeks when on August 1st the Allies frove the Germans off Point 112 for the final time. Counter Attack at Villers Bocage by David Pentland  Depicting Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Wittman, the top German Tank Commander, whose solitary tank knocked out most of the 4th county of London Yeomanry's regimental Stuart and Cromwell tanks.

"Strike for Gela" Sicily 11th June 1943 by David Pentland  Tiger I tanks of 2 Kompanie/ Schwere Panzer Abteilung 504, attached to Panzer Division Herman Goring, launch their attack on the main US 7th Army landing beach at Gela, on the first day of "Operation Husky". Despite the fact that the Herman Goring troops were untried in battle it was only the devastating effect of allied naval gunfire that stopped them reaching and probably destroying the beach head.

"Clash of Steel", Prokhorovka, Kursk, 12th July 1943 by David Pentland  The battle for Prokhorovka marked the high water mark of the German southern drive for Kursk. At the apex of the thrust were the 14 tiger tanks of the 13 Heavy Tank Company, 1st SS Panzer Division "Liebstandarte", led by Michael Wittman. Their advance was eventually thwarted, however, by the epic charge of the Soviet 29th Guards Tank Corps, as part of 5th Guards Tank Army's furious counter attack against the SS Tank Corps.

Taming the Tiger by Geoff Lea  Typhoons attacking German Armour Convoys in the Falais Gap, Normandy 1944.

Tigers in Normandy by Nicholas Trudgian  Tigers of SS Panzer Battalion 102 yet again advance towards the infamous hill, passing two Shermans knocked out in the previous days fighting. Overhead, Me109s of II./JG26 give aerial support as the German armour makes a last ditch attempt to repel the advancing forces, in their effort to hold the important city of Caen.

Signed by Franz-Wilhelm Lochmann, Alfred Rubbel, Richard Scharzmann.

As the sun slowly begins to rise this wintry morning over Thorpe Abbots, Norfolk, ground crew prepare B-17G The All American Girl in an almost surreal setting, for her 99th dangerous mission over enemy territory. On 10th January 1945, 19-year-old pilot, 1st Lt. John Dodrill and his crew went missing on a combat sortie to Cologne. Like many other crews, they made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom, with the Bloody Hundredth Bombardment Group playing its full part with courage and honour.

In the skies just west of Amiens on 20th April 1918, the celebrated German ace, Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, flying his famous all-red Fokker DR.1 Triplane 425/17 and accompanied by other DR.1s of his notorious Flying Circus, encountered Sopwith Camels of No.3 and No.201 Squadrons and a fierce aerial battle ensued. Two Sopwith Camels were to fall to the Red Baron's guns that day, the first of them being Major Richard Raymond-Barker, shown here flicking his aircraft to the right to avoid the German's fire. Raymond-Barker was almost immediately shot down, his burning aircraft being consumed by fire on impact. Just minutes later, Second Lieutenant David Lewis was caught and despatched, these two British scouts being the last ever victims of Baron von Richthofen.

The Vulcan B2 of 50 Squadron heads to Ascension Island from its base at Waddington, where it had been completely overhauled, including the fitting of a refuelling probe, which had to be found from various stores at Catterick, Goosebay in Labrador, Canada, and Wright-Patterson Airfield in Ohio, USA. The Vulcan would take part in the seven planned bombing missions during the Falklands campaign codenamed Operation Black Buck. Each mission would require a solo Vulcan Bomber (plus an airborne reserve Vulcan in case of problems with the first) to fly and bomb the Argentinean airfield at Port Stanley, requiring the support of 12 Handley Page Victor K2 tankers of 55 and 57 squadron on the outward journey and 2 Victors and a Nimrod on the return journey.

Viewed across the damaged stern of the 80-gun San Nicholas, Nelson drives HMS Captain onto the Spanish vessel in order that she can be boarded and taken as a prize, the British marines and men scrambling up the Captains bowsprit to use it as a bridge. The San Nicholas then fouled the Spanish three decker San Joseph (112), allowing Nelson and his men to take both ships as prizes in a single manoeuvre. Germanys U-boat fleet had almost brought Britain to its knees in the First World war, twenty years later the story was very similar. the German U-boat arm came perilously close to cutting the lifeline that crossed the Atlantic between North America and Britain. in the early years of the war Donitz realised that keeping his U-boats at sea for as long as possible would greatly increase their chances of success. here U-93 (left) and U-94 take fuel from the auxiliary cruiser Kormoran whilst in the mid-Atlantic during 1941

In a time when loyalty to one club is a rare commodity, Manchester United have managed to maintain the services of Salford born Paul Sholes since he graduated from being a trainee in 1991. Since then Paul has featured in over 400 games for the Red Devils and at the same time has had a distinguished England career of 65 caps. Paul's versatility means Sir Alex ferguson has used him in many different positions though he is most effective playing behind the front two, where he can time his runs into the penalty area to devastating effect. Paul Scoles has scored some spectacular goals and has assisted in countless more. Paul will go down in Old Trafford history as one of United's best and most consistent players of the last 25 years.
